While on a day trip to the Altun-Ha Maya Ruins our Guide pointed to a particular tree
then asked us if we knew what it was called. Nobody in our group had a clue. He chuckled and said "this is what
we call the tourist tree". He then explained that it is actually the Gumbolimbo tree (sometimes spelled Gumbo Limbo).
He told us that this tree needs the protection of the larger trees within the rainforest because if the sun hits directly
on the Gumbolimbo tree's bark it turns red and then starts to flake off... "just like you tourist" he added with a big laugh.
We were all amused!
Actually I was so amused that upon my return to the States I established GUMBOLIMBO
RECORDS to record and produce the various songs I had written while in Belize. I still think the Gumbolimbo tree
